Posture and Screen Time in Kids: Building Healthy Habits Early

Tablets for homework, video calls with grandparents, hours of gaming or streaming — screens are woven into childhood now in a way that simply wasn't true a generation ago. That's not inherently a problem, but the postures kids fall into while using them often are, and the habits formed young tend to stick.

Why Younger Kids Are a Different Concern Than Teens

Much of the public conversation about screens and posture focuses on teenagers and phones ("text neck"), but younger children face their own version of the problem, often starting earlier and less visibly: slouched over a tablet on the couch, hunched at a too-tall desk during virtual schoolwork, or curled into an awkward position on the floor during gaming sessions. Younger kids also have less body awareness and are less likely to notice or mention discomfort, which means postural strain can build for months before a parent catches it.

There's also a practical difference in intervention: a teenager can at least understand and buy into ergonomic advice, while a seven-year-old mostly needs the environment itself changed, since reminders alone rarely produce lasting behavior change at that age. That's part of why we focus so much on setup and habit-building rather than instruction when we're talking with families of younger kids.

Because a young child's spine and postural muscles are still actively developing, patterns formed now — good or bad — tend to become the default they carry into adolescence and beyond. That makes early childhood a genuinely useful window for building good habits, not just a smaller version of the teenage problem.

           Building Better Habits Early

Small environmental changes make a bigger difference than reminders to "sit up straight," which most kids tune out within minutes. Raising screens closer to eye level, using a proper chair and desk setup instead of couches and floors for extended screen sessions, and building in regular movement breaks all reduce the sustained postural load without requiring constant correction.

We also encourage parents to model the behavior they want, since kids are more likely to internalize posture habits they see practiced consistently than ones only mentioned as a rule. A shared "screen break, stretch break" routine tends to land better than a one-sided instruction.

           How Chiropractic Care Fits In

We assess spinal mobility, muscular tension, and postural patterns in children showing early signs of screen-related strain, and address restrictions with gentle, age-appropriate care. Just as importantly, we help families build a realistic, sustainable setup at home — because a single office visit won't undo hours of daily screen habits, but a better desk height and a regular movement break might.

We'll also check in on how things are actually going at follow-up visits, since a setup that sounded good in the office doesn't always survive contact with a busy household — it's worth adjusting the plan rather than sticking rigidly to advice that isn't working in practice.

Chiropractic Care in Each Trimester: What to Expect

Pregnancy transforms your body in profound ways — and those changes don’t happen all at once. Each trimester brings a new set of physical demands, postural shifts, and hormonal changes that affect your spine, pelvis, and nervous system. Chiropractic care can be a valuable source of support throughout all three stages — but what that care looks like evolves as your pregnancy progresses.

Here’s what to expect at each stage when you visit West University Wellness.

First Trimester: Laying the Foundation (Weeks 1–13)

The first trimester is often when women feel the most uncertain about chiropractic care. The good news: gentle chiropractic adjustments are generally considered safe during the first trimester and may be especially beneficial during this foundational period.

During these early weeks, your body begins producing relaxin — a hormone that loosens ligaments throughout the pelvis in preparation for birth. While this is a natural and necessary process, it can also create instability and discomfort, particularly in the sacroiliac joints and lower back.

In the first trimester, our focus is on:

Supporting nervous system function as your body undergoes rapid hormonal shifts

Reducing early low back, hip, and neck tension

Adjustments in this trimester are gentle and do not involve any pressure on the abdomen. Many patients find they also experience relief from headaches and nausea as a secondary benefit of improved spinal alignment.

Second Trimester: Supporting a Growing Body (Weeks 14–26)

The second trimester is often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy — energy returns, nausea typically subsides, and the baby bump begins to show. But as your center of gravity shifts forward, your lumbar spine takes on new stress, and round ligament pain becomes a common complaint.

This is also the stage when fetal positioning becomes increasingly important. At West University Wellness, we begin paying close attention to pelvic symmetry and intrauterine constraint during the second trimester — giving your baby the best possible environment to move and grow.

In the second trimester, our approach includes:

Third Trimester: Preparing for Birth (Weeks 27–40+)

The third trimester is when chiropractic care becomes most time-sensitive. As your baby grows and descends, pelvic alignment plays a direct role in how much room your baby has to position optimally for labor. This is also when many mothers experience the most discomfort — including sciatica, pubic symphysis pain, and significant low back pressure.

We modify our techniques significantly in the third trimester. We use the Thompson drop table — a specialized chiropractic table that allows for safe, effective adjustments without any pressure on your abdomen — making it ideal for women in their late pregnancy.

One of the most important things we tell our expecting patients is this: chiropractic care is most effective when it’s proactive, not reactive. You don’t need to be in pain to benefit. Starting care early in your pregnancy — even in the first trimester — means your pelvis stays balanced throughout, giving your baby the best possible environment from the very beginning.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help When Your Baby is Breech

Finding out your baby is breech can feel alarming — especially as your due date approaches. You may have questions about what it means, what your options are, and whether there’s anything you can do to support a better outcome. You’re not alone. At West University Wellness, this is one of the most common conversations we have with expecting mothers in their second and third trimesters.

The good news is that chiropractic care — specifically through a technique called the Webster Technique — may play a meaningful supportive role. Here’s what you need to understand.

What Does It Mean When a Baby is Breech?

A baby is considered breech when they are positioned feet-first or bottom-first in the uterus, rather than head-down (vertex position), which is the optimal position for a vaginal birth. Most babies naturally move into the head-down position by 36 weeks, but some do not — and when that happens, many care providers begin discussing interventions.

There are several types of breech presentations:

           Frank breech:

baby’s bottom is down, legs are straight up toward the head

           Complete breech:

           baby is sitting cross-legged

           •

           Footling breech:

one or both feet are pointing downward

In many cases, a baby’s inability to move into the head-down position is related to tension and imbalance in the mother’s pelvis and surrounding structures — not a fixed problem with the baby.

Why Pelvic Balance Matters for Fetal Positioning

The uterus is not a free-floating structure. It is supported by a network of ligaments — including the round ligaments and uterosacral ligaments — that attach to the pelvis and sacrum. When the pelvis is misaligned or the sacrum is subluxated, these ligaments can become uneven in their tension, which may restrict the amount of space available inside the uterus.

This condition, known as intrauterine constraint, can limit a baby’s ability to move freely and find the optimal position for birth. In other words, the baby may not be breech because something is wrong — they may simply not have enough room to move.

           How Chiropractic Care May Help

This is the key distinction that surprises many of our patients: chiropractic care for a breech presentation is performed entirely on the mother, not the baby. Our goal is to reduce pelvic subluxation and relieve intrauterine constraint — giving your baby the optimal environment and room to move into the best possible position for birth on its own.

At West University Wellness, we use the Webster Technique — a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the sacrum and pelvis — along with gentle soft tissue work on the round ligaments. By restoring balance to the mother’s pelvic structures, we aim to create more symmetrical space in the uterus so the baby has the freedom to reposition.

Research published through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) suggests that Webster Technique care may support optimal fetal positioning. Many of our patients — and the midwives and OB-GYNs who refer to us — have seen encouraging results, though individual outcomes always vary.

It is important to understand that chiropractic care does not physically move or reposition the baby. What we do is address the underlying pelvic imbalance that may be restricting your baby’s movement — and allow the body’s own intelligence to take over from there.

           When Should You Come In?

If your care provider has identified a breech presentation, we recommend coming in as soon as possible — ideally before 36 weeks, when there is still maximum room for movement. That said, we have worked with mothers at later stages of pregnancy as well.

Chiropractic Care for Colic: Does It Work?

If you're the parent of a colicky baby, you already know the drill: hours of inconsolable crying, often in the late afternoon or evening, with no obvious cause and no reliable fix. It's exhausting, and it's completely understandable to want answers — including whether chiropractic care can actually help.

Here's an honest look at what colic is, what the research says about chiropractic care for it, and how our pediatric-certified team approaches it at West University Wellness.

           What Colic Actually Is

Colic is typically defined using the "rule of threes": crying for more than three hours a day, more than three days a week, for more than three weeks, in an otherwise healthy, well-fed infant. It usually starts around two to three weeks of age and tends to resolve on its own by three to four months.

The exact cause isn't fully understood. Suspected contributors include an immature digestive system, gas, difficulty regulating the nervous system, and general overstimulation. Because there's no single known cause, there's also no single guaranteed fix — which is part of what makes colic so frustrating for families.

What the Research Says About Chiropractic Care and Colic

Several small clinical studies and case series have looked at chiropractic care for colicky infants, with a number reporting reductions in crying time compared to control groups. A handful of trials have found statistically meaningful improvement, particularly when parents track crying hours before and after care.

At the same time, the research base is limited. Many studies are small, some lack a properly blinded control group, and a few systematic reviews have concluded that the evidence isn't yet strong enough to call chiropractic care a proven, first-line colic treatment. Other reviews are more favorable, particularly for gentle, infant-specific techniques.

In plain terms: some research is genuinely encouraging, but the overall evidence is still developing. Any honest answer to "does it work?" has to hold both of those things at once.

What We Actually Do for Colicky Infants

Pediatric chiropractic care for infants looks nothing like adult adjustments. The technique involves light, gentle pressure — often about the pressure you'd use to check the ripeness of a tomato — applied to the spine and pelvis to assess and address areas of restricted motion, which may relate to nervous system regulation and digestive function.

A typical visit for a colicky infant may include:

Is It Right for Your Baby?

Chiropractic care isn't a replacement for medical evaluation. Before considering it, your pediatrician should rule out other causes of excessive crying, such as reflux, a milk protein allergy, or other underlying medical conditions. Chiropractic care is best considered as a complementary option once medical causes have been addressed or excluded — not a first stop.

If you're exhausted, worried, and looking for another avenue to try alongside your pediatrician's guidance, gentle chiropractic evaluation is a reasonable, low-risk option to discuss. We're happy to talk through whether it makes sense for your baby specifically.

           Disclaimer

The information in this article is provided for general educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition, and should not be interpreted as personalized medical advice. Every infant is different, and colic can have multiple underlying causes, some of which require medical evaluation and treatment. Reading this article does not create a doctor-patient relationship between you, your child, and West University Wellness or any of its practitioners.

Before beginning chiropractic care or any complementary therapy for your infant, please consult your child's pediatrician or primary care provider, particularly to rule out underlying medical causes of excessive crying such as gastroesophageal reflux, food protein allergies or intolerances, infection, or other conditions that require medical management. Chiropractic care for infants should only be performed by a practitioner with specific pediatric training and certification, using techniques appropriate for a developing infant spine and nervous system.

Individual results vary, and no specific outcome is guaranteed. The research on chiropractic care for infant colic is still developing; while some studies report positive results, the overall body of evidence is limited, and chiropractic care should not be relied upon as a sole or first-line treatment. If your infant shows signs of a medical emergency — including difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, fever in a newborn, blood in stool, or lethargy — seek immediate medical attention rather than scheduling a chiropractic visit.

Why Would a Newborn Need a Chiropractic Adjustment?

You’ve just brought your baby home. They’re perfect, healthy, and brand new — so when someone suggests a chiropractic evaluation for your newborn, your first reaction might be confusion or even alarm. Why would a perfectly healthy baby need to see a chiropractor?

It’s one of the questions we hear most often at West University Wellness — and the answer tends to surprise parents. The truth is, birth is one of the most physically demanding experiences a human body ever goes through. And that includes your baby’s body, not just yours.

What Happens to a Baby’s Spine During Birth?

During labor and delivery, your baby’s head and neck are subjected to significant compressive and rotational forces as they navigate through the birth canal. Even in a completely uncomplicated vaginal birth, the baby’s cervical spine must flex, extend, and rotate through multiple stages of descent — all while the rest of the body follows.

When assistive interventions are involved — such as vacuum extraction, forceps delivery, or a C-section (which requires pulling the baby through a tight incision) — those forces can be even more pronounced. The result is that many newborns arrive with subtle misalignments in their cervical spine or tension in their cranial bones — what chiropractors call subluxations — that don’t show up on routine newborn screenings but can affect how their nervous system functions.

What Can These Subtle Misalignments Cause?

The nervous system controls virtually every function in your baby’s body — from digestion to immune response to sleep. When subluxations are present in a newborn’s cervical spine or cranial bones, they may interfere with nerve communication in ways that contribute to issues parents often assume are just “newborn things.”

Common signs that a newborn may benefit from a chiropractic evaluation include:

Plagiocephaly — early flattening on one side of the skull

Many parents who bring their newborns in for evaluation are surprised to find that these common issues often have a structural component — one that can be gently and safely addressed in the earliest weeks of life.

What Does a Newborn Adjustment Actually Look Like?

This is where most parents experience the biggest surprise: a newborn chiropractic adjustment looks nothing like what you’ve seen for adults. There is no cracking, no popping, and absolutely no forceful manipulation.

For a newborn, an adjustment involves extremely gentle fingertip pressure — typically no more force than you would use to test whether a ripe peach is ready to eat. Our doctors are specifically trained in neonatal and pediatric techniques, applying precise, light pressure to guide vertebrae into better alignment and release tension in the cranial bones and surrounding tissues.

Most newborns tolerate their adjustments beautifully. Many relax deeply during the process — and some fall asleep on the table.

At West University Wellness, all of our doctors have completed a minimum of 300 additional hours of pediatric chiropractic training beyond their doctoral degrees. Several hold the Advanced Certification from the American Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics (CACCP) — one of the most elite pediatric chiropractic credentials in the United States, held by only a small number of practitioners nationwide.

When Should You Bring Your Newborn In?

We recommend a chiropractic evaluation within the first few days to weeks of life — not because something is necessarily wrong, but because newborn tissue is highly adaptable and responds most readily to gentle care in these early weeks. The sooner any subluxations are identified and addressed, the sooner your baby’s nervous system can function without interference.

You don’t need to wait for a problem to appear. A wellness evaluation for a newborn is one of the most proactive things you can do to support healthy development right from the start.

What is the Webster Technique and How Can It Help Your Pregnancy?

If you’re expecting, you’ve probably received more advice than you bargained for. But one recommendation you may not have heard yet — and one that could make a meaningful difference in your pregnancy experience — is chiropractic care using the Webster Technique.

At West University Wellness, we work with expecting mothers throughout every stage of pregnancy. One of the most common questions we hear is: “What exactly is the Webster Technique, and is it safe for me and my baby?” Here’s what you need to know.

           What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and gentle adjustment focused on the sacrum — the large triangular bone at the base of your spine — and the surrounding pelvic structures.

It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), after he observed a connection between sacral misalignment and complications during pregnancy and birth. The technique involves two components: a gentle adjustment to the sacrum to reduce subluxation, and a soft tissue release of the round ligaments that support the uterus.

When the sacrum is misaligned, it can create an uneven pull on the uterine ligaments — which may contribute to a condition known as intrauterine constraint, where the baby’s movement and positioning are restricted.

How the Webster Technique May Help During Pregnancy

Here’s the key distinction that surprises many of our patients: the Webster Technique is performed on the mother, not the baby. Our goal is to restore balance to the pelvis and reduce any intrauterine constraint — giving your baby the optimal environment and room to move into the best possible position for birth on its own.

When the pelvis is balanced and the uterine ligaments are relaxed, many of our patients report:

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It can lead to serious health issues, such as heart disease, hypertension, and daytime fatigue. While the most common treatments for sleep apnea involve lifestyle changes and the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, some individuals seek alternative approaches to alleviate their symptoms. One such alternative is chiropractic care. In this blog, we'll explore the intriguing relationship between sleep apnea and chiropractic spinal alignment, also known as subluxation.

Before delving into the connection between sleep apnea and chiropractic care, let's briefly understand what sleep apnea is. Sleep apnea is characterized by periodic interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, or apneas, can last for seconds to minutes and can occur numerous times throughout the night. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the upper airway is partially or completely blocked, leading to disrupted sleep.

           Chiropractic Subluxation and Its Role

Chiropractors believe that many health problems, including sleep apnea, can be linked to subluxations in the spine. Subluxations are misalignments or restrictions in the vertebrae that may affect the function of the nervous system. Chiropractors aim to correct these subluxations through spinal adjustments, which are non-invasive procedures designed to bring the spine back into alignment.

           The Connection

So, how does chiropractic spinal alignment relate to sleep apnea? It's all about the nervous system. The nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating the muscles responsible for keeping the airway open during sleep. When there are subluxations in the spine, it can interfere with the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore the spine's natural alignment, potentially reducing nerve interference. This can lead to improved communication between the nervous system and the muscles involved in maintaining open airways. While chiropractic care is not a standalone treatment for sleep apnea, some individuals have reported positive outcomes and a reduction in sleep apnea symptoms after receiving regular chiropractic adjustments.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating sleep apnea may vary from person to person. Moreover, it should be considered as a complementary therapy rather than a primary treatment method. Consulting with a healthcare professional is essential to develop a comprehensive plan for managing sleep apnea.

           Conclusion

The relationship between sleep apnea and chiropractic spinal alignment is an intriguing one. While chiropractic care may offer potential benefits by addressing subluxations in the spine and improving nervous system function, it should be approached as part of a holistic approach to managing sleep apnea. If you or a loved one is considering chiropractic care as part of your sleep apnea management, consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that it is a safe and appropriate addition to your treatment plan. Remember that individual experiences with chiropractic care may vary, and the effectiveness of such treatment can depend on several factors unique to each person's condition.

Whiplash takes place when a person’s spine, usually their head and neck, is thrown very quickly in one direction and then rebounded in the opposite direction. It may also happen from side-to-side or when the neck is rotated

This sudden and unnatural movement can lead to nerve, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle, and disc stress, irritation, or damage. Chiropractors call this vertebral subluxation

What’s worse is that these vertebral subluxations can reverse the natural curve of the cervical spine and can persist in the spine for many years before the patient even feels any pain

Chiropractors use tests such as x-rays, MRI, muscle and temperature scans, neurological, and orthopedic tests to determine if a patient is suffering from whiplash

Although it may take a while to heal from this type of injury, chiropractic care has an excellent rate of success in treating this condition

Chiropractic care can be effective for breech babies.

Breech babies are those that are positioned feet-first in the womb instead of head-first.

While chiropractors cannot turn breech babies directly, they can help by gently adjusting a mother's spine and pelvis back into a proper balanced state. This reestablishes normal physiological function and allows the baby to find the best possible position for birth.

One technique used by chiropractors is called the Webster Technique. It is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system and balances maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can lead to a safer, easier birth outcome.

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed an 82% success rate for specially trained chiropractors turning breech babies head-down. Chiropractors don't turn breech babies directly, but they can help facilitate a baby's ability to turn into the right position before birth by creating a more functional environment.

How long does it take for Webster Technique to work?

The time it takes for Webster Technique to work can vary. It is suggested that beginning the seventh month of pregnancy, a mother should be evaluated with the Webster Technique to minimize the potential for intrauterine constraint. Visits may go weekly or per patient needs in the last 4 to 6 weeks. The frequency of care for the Webster Technique is dependent upon when the constraint position is first discovered.

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system and balances maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can lead to a safer, easier birth outcome. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or sacroiliac joint dysfunction, improving neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region.
