What is the Webster Technique and How Can It Help Your Pregnancy?

If you’re expecting, you’ve probably received more advice than you bargained for. But one recommendation you may not have heard yet — and one that could make a meaningful difference in your pregnancy experience — is chiropractic care using the Webster Technique.

At West University Wellness, we work with expecting mothers throughout every stage of pregnancy. One of the most common questions we hear is: “What exactly is the Webster Technique, and is it safe for me and my baby?” Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and gentle adjustment focused on the sacrum — the large triangular bone at the base of your spine — and the surrounding pelvic structures.

It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), after he observed a connection between sacral misalignment and complications during pregnancy and birth. The technique involves two components: a gentle adjustment to the sacrum to reduce subluxation, and a soft tissue release of the round ligaments that support the uterus.

When the sacrum is misaligned, it can create an uneven pull on the uterine ligaments — which may contribute to a condition known as intrauterine constraint, where the baby’s movement and positioning are restricted.

How the Webster Technique May Help During Pregnancy

Here’s the key distinction that surprises many of our patients: the Webster Technique is performed on the mother, not the baby. Our goal is to restore balance to the pelvis and reduce any intrauterine constraint — giving your baby the optimal environment and room to move into the best possible position for birth on its own.

When the pelvis is balanced and the uterine ligaments are relaxed, many of our patients report:

Reduced low back and hip pain

       Relief from round ligament discomfort

Greater ease of movement as their pregnancy progresses

A sense that their body feels more balanced and supported

Research published through the ICPA suggests that Webster Technique care during pregnancy may support better pelvic function and comfort throughout all three trimesters. Many midwives and OB-GYNs in the Houston area refer their patients to us specifically for this reason.

What to Expect at West University Wellness

All of our Doctors of Chiropractic are Webster Technique certified through the ICPA — and we are proud to have more Webster-certified chiropractors than any other practice in Houston.

We understand that pregnancy changes everything, including how your body responds to care. That’s why we modify our techniques for each trimester. In your second and third trimesters, for example, we use a specialized Thompson drop table that allows for a safe, comfortable adjustment without any pressure on your abdomen.

From your very first visit, our goal is to make you feel at ease. We take time to understand your pregnancy history, your concerns, and your birth goals — so that every visit supports both you and your growing baby.

Simple Tips to Support Pelvic Balance at Home

In between visits, there are a few gentle habits that may help support your pelvic alignment:

Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees to reduce sacral stress

Avoid crossing your legs when sitting, which can create uneven tension in the pelvis

Try gentle prenatal stretches for the round ligaments — ask your chiropractor which ones are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy

Stay hydrated to support the health of your spinal discs and surrounding tissues

As always, consult with your chiropractor or OB-GYN before starting any new exercise or stretching routine during pregnancy.

You Deserve Support Every Step of the Way

Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable journeys your body will ever take. The Webster Technique is one tool that may help you move through that journey with greater comfort, balance, and confidence — so that both you and your baby are in the best possible position when the time comes.

Curious whether the Webster Technique is right for your pregnancy? We’d love to talk with you.
